Now that the first few weeks are behind us, we can update you all on what we've been up to in our music rooms!
For the first few classes in each grade, we all kicked off the year with a music appreciation / listening activity featuring the upbeat song "Climb Out Your Window" by Walk Off the Earth. This activity was something that everyone could share throughout the school. We discussed the meaning behind the lyrics (no, it wasn't about actually jumping out your window!) and how we should all have fun, do what we love and take ourselves outside our comfort zones. In the younger grades we clung to the idea of finding something you love to do. The students all made artistic representations of what the song made them think of and the work of the older students can be seen adorning the walls of the upstairs hallway, near their music room.
You can listen to it here: Climb Out Your Window
In Kindergarten, we are practicing to keep the steady beat and moving to music. We listen to hear the way the music tells us to move. We are also exploring some of our classroom instruments.
Cycle one students have been learning and practicing how to keep a steady beat. Some examples of steady beat is our hearts, clocks and windshield wipers. We are also starting to learn the basics of rhythm with songs like Lucy Locket and Bounce the Ball, adding in ti-ti and ta (eighth notes and quarter notes). Grade 1 has even started to create their own rhythmic compositions!
|The beat is the heart of the music!|
In Grade 3 with Miss Jen, students have started on their violins!
They are learning how to sit, hold the violin correctly and pluck the individual strings. Looks like they are off to a good start!
Grades 4 - 6 are all set now to start on their violins next week!
Finally - AUDITIONS for Suessical Jr. are well under way for all those in grade 3 -6 who wished to participate and showed up to the information meeting. Some great performers have already shined and we can't wait to see all those who have yet to come. Callbacks will take place in the coming weeks after all of the auditions have been completed. Stay tuned for more info!
